Markdown Table Generator

Create Markdown tables without counting pipes: edit cells in a grid, add or remove rows and columns, set each column’s alignment and copy GitHub-flavoured Markdown with a live preview. Pipes and line breaks in cells are escaped so the table never breaks.

This tool runs entirely in your browser.

How to use the Markdown Table Generator

  1. 1Type the column headings and cells. Use + Row and + Column to grow the table and ✕ to delete a row or column.
  2. 2Choose the alignment of each column under its heading: default, left, centre or right.
  3. 3Copy or download the Markdown. Turn off “Align columns” if you prefer compact source without padding.

What is the Markdown Table Generator?

Markdown tables (from GitHub-flavoured Markdown, GFM) use pipes to separate cells and a separator line of dashes under the header. Colons in the separator set alignment: :--- is left, :---: is centre and ---: is right. The format works on GitHub, GitLab, many wikis, static site generators and note apps.

A pipe character inside a cell would start a new column, so it is written as \|, and a line break would end the row, so it becomes <br>, which most renderers show as a line break. Padding the columns with spaces is optional — renderers ignore it — but it makes the Markdown source easy to read in a code review.

Frequently asked questions

How do I align a column in Markdown?

Put colons in the separator line: :--- for left, :---: for centre and ---: for right. In this editor, pick the alignment under the column heading.

How do I put a pipe | in a table cell?

Escape it as \|. The generator does this automatically, along with backslashes and line breaks.

Can I merge cells?

No. GitHub-flavoured Markdown tables don’t support merged cells or multi-line rows; use an HTML table if you need them.

Is the Markdown Table Generator free and private?

Yes. The Markdown Table Generator is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser. What you type is never sent to a server or stored.
