How to use the CSV to Markdown Converter

  1. 1Paste CSV (or tab-separated data copied from a spreadsheet), or drop a .csv file on the box.
  2. 2Check the delimiter and whether the first row is the header, and pick an alignment. Enter a row limit to convert only the first rows.
  3. 3Copy or download the Markdown table and paste it into your README, wiki or issue.

What is the CSV to Markdown Converter?

Converting CSV to Markdown is the quickest way to put spreadsheet data into a README, a pull request or documentation. The converter reads the CSV with the standard quoting rules — commas and line breaks inside double quotes stay in one cell, and "" is a literal quote — then writes one Markdown row per record.

Markdown has no way to escape a line break inside a table row, so line breaks inside cells become <br>; pipes become \| so they don’t split the cell. Very large tables are hard to read in Markdown and slow to render, so output is capped at 5,000 rows and column padding is switched off above 1,000 rows.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste data straight from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Copied cells arrive tab-separated; the delimiter is detected automatically.

What if my CSV has no header row?

Untick “First row is the header”. The columns get the headings Column 1, Column 2 and so on, which you can edit afterwards.

Is there a size limit?

Files up to 25 MB can be opened, and up to 5,000 rows are converted (use the row limit for fewer). Bigger tables are better shared as CSV.

Is the CSV to Markdown Converter free and private?

Yes. The CSV to Markdown Converter is free, needs no account, and processes your files entirely in your browser. Files are never uploaded to a server or stored.
