How to use the Typing Speed Test
- 1Choose a test length (15 s, 30 s, 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes) and the text: common words or full sentences, with optional punctuation and numbers.
- 2Click the text box and start typing — the timer starts with your first key. Correct letters turn dark, mistakes turn red, and you can fix them with Backspace.
- 3Keep going until the timer runs out. Tab or Esc restarts with a new text at any time.
- 4Read your result: net WPM, accuracy, raw WPM, errors and a chart of your pace. Your best score for each length is kept in this browser.
What is the Typing Speed Test?
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where one “word” is any 5 characters including spaces. That standard makes results comparable: 250 correct characters in one minute is 50 WPM whether you typed short or long words. Net WPM counts only correct characters; raw WPM counts everything you typed; accuracy is the share of key presses that were right, including mistakes you later corrected.
Most adults type about 35–45 WPM, office work is comfortable from around 50 WPM, and professional typists reach 70 or more. Accuracy matters more than speed while you practise: aim for 96% or better and the speed follows. The test runs entirely in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How is WPM calculated?
Correct characters are divided by 5 to get “words”, then by the minutes elapsed. In a 30-second test, 180 correct characters is 36 words in half a minute, so 72 WPM. Raw WPM uses every character typed, mistakes included.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average for adults, 50–60 WPM is good for most jobs, and 70+ WPM is fast. Competitive typists exceed 100 WPM in short tests. Accuracy of 95% or higher matters as much as speed.
Does the test work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Tap the text box to open your on-screen keyboard. Expect lower scores than on a physical keyboard, and turn off autocorrect suggestions if they insert words for you.
Are my results saved?
Your last 10 results and your best score for each test length are kept in this browser’s local storage only. Use “Clear history” to delete them. Nothing is uploaded.
Which test length should I use?
One minute is the usual benchmark and what most job applications mean by a typing test. Short 15–30 second tests show your burst speed; 3–5 minute tests show the pace you can sustain, which is usually a little lower.
Is the Typing Speed Test free and private?
Yes. The Typing Speed Test is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser. What you type is never sent to a server or stored.
