Exponent Calculator
Raise any number to a power — including negative and fractional exponents — and see huge or tiny results in scientific notation (up to about 10³⁰⁸), with exact digits for whole-number powers. You can also solve for the exponent (a logarithm) or the base.
This tool runs entirely in your browser.
How to use the Exponent Calculator
- 1Choose what to solve for: the result, the exponent or the base.
- 2Enter the two known values.
- 3Read the answer, its scientific notation and a check.
What is the Exponent Calculator?
aⁿ multiplies a by itself n times; a negative exponent means the reciprocal (2⁻³ = 1/8) and a fractional exponent means a root (8^(1/3) = 2). Whole-number powers are calculated exactly, so 2¹⁰⁰ shows all 31 digits (very long results show the first and last digits).
Solving for the exponent uses logarithms: n = log(result) ÷ log(base), so 2ⁿ = 1024 gives n = 10. Solving for the base takes the nth root of the result.
Frequently asked questions
What is anything to the power of 0?
1, for any non-zero base. 0⁰ is usually defined as 1 in algebra and combinatorics.
Why can’t I raise a negative number to 0.5?
That is the square root of a negative number, which has no real value. Use the square root calculator to see the imaginary result.
Is the Exponent Calculator free and private?
Yes. The Exponent Calculator is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser. What you type is never sent to a server or stored.
