Random Team Generator

Paste a list of names and split them into random teams — by number of teams or people per team — as evenly as possible. Optionally put one captain in each team, then reshuffle until you’re happy and copy the result.

This tool runs entirely in your browser.

How to use the Random Team Generator

  1. 1Paste or type the names, one per line or separated by commas.
  2. 2Choose the number of teams or the number of people per team, and optionally list captains.
  3. 3Click “Make teams”, reshuffle if you like, and copy the teams.

What is the Random Team Generator?

Names are shuffled with your browser’s cryptographically secure random generator and dealt so team sizes differ by at most one — 10 people into 3 teams gives 4, 3 and 3. Captains are placed first, one per team, so each team gets a leader before the rest are shuffled in.

Useful for classrooms, sports, workshops, hackathons and game nights. Nothing is stored or sent, so it’s fine for pupils’ or colleagues’ names.

Frequently asked questions

Is the split really random?

Yes. Every arrangement is equally likely; ties for the smallest team are broken randomly too, so team 1 isn’t favoured.

Can I balance teams by skill?

List your strongest players as captains — they’ll be spread one per team — and the rest are shuffled in.

Is the Random Team Generator free and private?

Yes. The Random Team Generator is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser. What you type is never sent to a server or stored.
