How to use the Protect PDF

What is the Protect PDF?
The PDF is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard encryption in the PDF specification, using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly. Without the password the content cannot be read.
There is no way to recover a forgotten password — keep a copy of the unprotected original or store the password in a password manager.
Frequently asked questions
How strong should the password be?
Use at least 12 characters or a 4–5 word passphrase. Short passwords can be guessed by offline cracking tools.
Are printing and copying restrictions secure?
They are honoured by mainstream PDF readers but are not encryption — some tools ignore them. Only the open password truly protects the content.
Is the Protect PDF free and private?
