Meme Caption Checklist: Readable Text on Any Image

ยท 4 min read

ImagesMemesChecklist

A readable meme caption is short, large, high-contrast and placed where it doesn't cover the important part of the picture. The classic style of white capitals with a thick black outline exists for a reason: it stays legible on bright skies, dark rooms and busy backgrounds alike. Keep each caption to a line or two, size it so it can be read at thumbnail size, and the joke lands before anyone scrolls past.

Here's a checklist you can run through for every meme, plus how each point maps to the Meme Generator.

Why the white text with a black outline?

Text needs contrast with whatever is directly behind it. On a photo, the background changes from letter to letter: one word sits on a white wall, the next on a dark coat. A solid color that works for one word fails for the next.

An outline solves that by bringing its own contrast. White fill reads against dark areas, the black edge reads against light areas, and every letter carries both. That's why the generator starts with white captions and Black outline turned on. The outline's thickness scales with the text (about one-seventh of the font size), so it stays proportional whether the caption is small or huge.

If you turn the outline off, you're relying entirely on the image behind the text, so only do it when the caption sits on an even, contrasting area.

The checklist

1. Is the caption short enough?

Feeds are skimmed. A top line that sets up and a bottom line that pays off is still the most reliable structure. If you need three sentences, the joke probably needs editing rather than a smaller font.

Long captions wrap automatically at about 92% of the image width, and you can press Enter to force a line break where the rhythm works best.

2. Is the text big enough for a phone?

Caption Size is set as a percentage of the image width, from 3% to 20%, starting at 10%. On a 1,200-pixel-wide image, 10% means 120-pixel letters. Because size is relative, the caption looks the same whether you start from a small screenshot or a large photo.

A practical test: zoom your browser out until the preview is about the width of a phone feed. If you have to squint, increase the size or cut words.

3. Does the text cover anything important?

Faces, hands and the object the joke is about should stay visible. The default positions put captions near the top and bottom edges, where there's usually sky, floor or empty space. If that's where the action is, drag the caption elsewhere: click near a caption on the preview and move it.

4. ALL CAPS or normal case?

The ALL CAPS checkbox is on by default, matching the classic look, and applies to every caption. Turn it off for longer text, quotes or a calmer tone. Mixed case is easier to read in longer lines, because word shapes are more distinctive.

5. Does a colored caption still have contrast?

Each caption has its own color picker. Colored text can label different speakers or match a brand, but keep the outline on and avoid colors close to the background. Yellow and white both read well with a black edge; dark blue or deep red mostly disappear against shadows.

6. Do you have the right to use the image?

Use your own photos, screenshots you're allowed to share, or templates whose license permits reuse. The generator deliberately ships without a library of copyrighted templates, so you always start from your own image.

How to make a meme step by step

  1. Open the Meme Generator and choose an image, or paste one with Ctrl/โŒ˜ + V.
  2. Replace TOP TEXT and BOTTOM TEXT in the Caption 1 and Caption 2 boxes. Use Remove to delete one you don't need.
  3. Click + Add caption for extra text. New captions appear in the center of the image.
  4. Adjust each caption's Size and color, and toggle ALL CAPS and Black outline.
  5. Drag captions on the preview to position them.
  6. Click Download PNG. The file is saved with -meme added to the original name and has no watermark.

The image and captions are combined in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

What resolution does the download have?

The meme is saved at the image's own resolution, up to 2,000 pixels on the longest side. Larger photos are scaled down to that, so a 4032 ร— 3024 phone photo comes out at 2000 ร— 1500. That's plenty for social media. If you need a smaller file afterward, run it through the Image Compressor.

FAQ

Why doesn't my caption look like the classic meme font?

The generator uses Impact when your device has it, and falls back to similar bold fonts (Anton, Arial Black or a system sans-serif) when it doesn't. The result looks slightly different between devices, but the outline keeps it readable either way.

Can I add text in the middle of the image?

Yes. Add a caption, and it starts in the center; drag it wherever you like.

Why is the download a PNG and not a JPG?

PNG keeps text edges crisp with no compression artifacts around the letters. Platforms usually recompress uploads anyway.
