Lorem Ipsum Myths: When Placeholder Text Helps or Hurts

ยท 3 min read

DesignWeb DevelopmentMyths

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used to fill a layout before the real words exist. It's useful for judging typography, spacing and structure without readers getting distracted by meaning. But it's not a substitute for real content, and it causes problems when it hides how long the real text will be or slips onto a live site.

Here are the myths that cause most of those problems.

Myth 1: It's random gibberish

Not quite. Lorem Ipsum comes from a real Latin text: Cicero's philosophical work De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The famous opening is a chopped-up fragment of a sentence about pain ("dolorem ipsum"), with words cut, rearranged and altered until it no longer means anything. The result looks like a real European language, with natural-seeming word lengths and occasional commas, which is exactly why designers like it.

Modern generators, including the Lorem Ipsum Generator, build fresh text from a pool of Latin-looking words. This one draws from 89 words, writes sentences of 8 to 17 words (adding a comma in the middle of longer ones) and groups 4 to 7 sentences into a paragraph. Every click of Generate gives a different result.

Myth 2: Placeholder text is neutral

Lorem Ipsum is neutral about meaning, but not about length. It can hide real layout issues:

  • Headlines. A card designed around "Lorem ipsum dolor" breaks when the real title is "How We Cut Our Onboarding Time in Half Without Hiring".
  • Translations. German and Finnish text often runs longer than English; button labels that fit in Latin may wrap in production.
  • Names and numbers. A user called "Jo" and one called "Maria Fernanda Rodrรญguez-Castellanos" need different space; so do "$5" and "$12,499.00".

Better approach: use Lorem Ipsum for body copy, but test headings, labels, names and prices with realistic, worst-case examples.

Myth 3: It's fine to leave in until launch

This is how "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" ends up on live product pages, in app store screenshots and in printed brochures. It looks unprofessional, and search engines treat pages full of placeholder text as low-quality content.

Safeguards:

  1. Before launch, search your codebase, CMS and design files for "lorem" and "ipsum".
  2. Use obviously fake text for anything that could slip through, such as "[HEADLINE GOES HERE]", which is harder to miss in review.
  3. Make "no placeholder text" an item on your release checklist.

Myth 4: Real content should always come first

Content-first design is a great principle, but sometimes the copy genuinely doesn't exist yet: the writer starts next week, the legal text is still under review, or you're testing a new typeface. In those cases, placeholder text is the honest choice. It also stops reviewers from bikeshedding the wording of a wireframe when you want feedback on structure.

The rule of thumb: Lorem Ipsum for decisions about form, real text for decisions about content.

Myth 5: You always need paragraphs

Different jobs need different amounts:

Job What to generate
Blog or article template 3โ€“5 paragraphs
Card descriptions or product blurbs 1โ€“2 sentences
Button and label stress test 2โ€“5 words
Table cells or tags 1โ€“3 words
Testing a long-form reading layout 10+ paragraphs

The generator lets you pick Paragraphs, Sentences or Words, from 1 up to 500.

How to generate placeholder text

  1. Set the Amount (1โ€“500) and choose a Unit: Paragraphs, Sentences or Words.
  2. Keep Start with "Lorem ipsumโ€ฆ" checked for the classic opening ("Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit"), or uncheck it for text that starts randomly.
  3. Click Generate.
  4. Click Copy or Download for plain text, or Copy as HTML to get each paragraph wrapped in <p> tags, ready to paste into a template.

When you need a precise word count for a layout, generate words, then confirm with the Word Counter. If you're filling a Markdown template, the Markdown Previewer lets you see the result formatted.

FAQ

Why not just use English filler text?

Readable English pulls attention. Reviewers start reading and commenting on the words instead of the layout. Latin-looking text reads as "text goes here" at a glance.

Is Lorem Ipsum copyrighted?

No. The source is over 2,000 years old, and generated filler is not a creative work anyone owns.

Can I make the text start differently each time?

Yes. Uncheck Start with "Lorem ipsumโ€ฆ" and every paragraph, including the first, begins with random words.

Need filler for a mock-up right now? Open the Lorem Ipsum Generator and copy as much as you need.
