Recipes, Rent and Maps: 6 Everyday Uses for Ratios
ยท 4 min read
A ratio compares two amounts, and most practical ratio questions are one of three jobs: finding a missing amount so two ratios stay equal, reducing a ratio to its simplest form, or splitting a total in a given ratio. Picking the wrong one is how a cleaning solution ends up too strong.
The six examples below each use one of those jobs in the Ratio Calculator, whose Calculate menu offers Missing value (A : B = C : D), Simplify a ratio and Split a total in a ratio.
1. Stretching a sauce you already started
A glaze calls for soy sauce and honey in a 2 : 3 ratio. You have already poured 50 ml of soy sauce. How much honey goes in?
This is a missing value: 2 : 3 = 50 : ?. Enter A = 2, B = 3, C = 50 and leave D empty. The answer is D = 75, and the proportion line reads 2 : 3 = 50 : 75. It is cross-multiplication, rearranged for the blank.
2. Diluting a concentrate (the classic mistake)
A floor cleaner says "dilute 1 : 9" and you want a 500 ml spray bottle. There are two ways to read that, and they give different answers:
| Reading | Calculation | Concentrate | Water |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 ml is the finished bottle | Split 500 in 1 : 9 | 50 | 450 |
| 500 ml is the water only | 1 : 9 = ? : 500 | 55.5555555556 | 500 |
For a bottle that holds 500 ml, you want the first row: choose Split a total in a ratio, enter A = 1, B = 9 and Total to split = 500. The result is 50 and 450, with A shown as 10 % and B as 90 %. A 1 : 9 ratio means one part in ten, not one part in nine.
The second reading is right only when the label says "per" an amount of water. For example, 1 part concentrate to 4 parts water with 750 ml of water gives 1 : 4 = ? : 750, so C = 187.5 ml of concentrate.
3. Splitting rent by room size
Two roommates share an apartment for 1,800 a month. One bedroom is noticeably bigger, and you agree on a 5 : 4 split. Choose the split mode, enter A = 5, B = 4 and a total of 1,800. The shares come out as 1,000 and 800, or 55.5556 % and 44.4444 %.
The same mode handles prize money or tip pools: splitting 45 in a 3 : 2 ratio gives 27 and 18.
4. Reading a hiking map
On a 1 : 25,000 map, how far is a trail that measures 4 cm? Solve 1 : 25000 = 4 : ?. The answer is D = 100,000, in the same unit as C, so 100,000 cm, which is 1 km.
Scale questions are where the 1 : n form helps. Simplify 2 : 50 and you get 1 : 25, which reads directly as "every unit on the model is 25 in real life."
5. Cleaning up awkward numbers
A class with 12 boys and 18 girls simplifies to 2 : 3. Decimals are fine too: 0.25 : 0.4 becomes 5 : 8, because the calculator scales both numbers to whole numbers first and then divides by their greatest common divisor.
The simplify mode also shows the ratio As a fraction (5/8), in n : 1 form (0.625 : 1) and as a Percent split (38.4615 % / 61.5385 %).
6. Mixing three ingredients
Concrete, mortar and some recipes use three-part ratios such as 1 : 2 : 3, and the calculator takes two parts at a time. You can still do it in two steps. For 60 kg of a 1 : 2 : 3 mix, first split 60 in 1 : 5 (the first part against the other two combined) to get 10 and 50. Then split that 50 in 2 : 3 to get 20 and 30. The mix is 10, 20 and 30 kg.
When the calculator stops you
- Fill exactly one blank. Leaving two of A to D empty shows "Fill in three of A, B, C and D and leave one empty."
- Zeros in the wrong place. 0 : 4 = 3 : ? has no answer because it would require dividing by zero, so you get a message instead of a number.
- Simplify and split need positive numbers. A ratio like โ2 : 4 is rejected in those modes.
- Units carry through. The answer is in whatever unit you used for the matching term, so keep C and D in the same unit.
If your ratio is really a fraction problem, such as adding 2/3 of a cup to 3/4 of a cup, the Fraction Calculator is the better tool.
FAQ
Is a ratio of 3 : 4 the same as 3/4?
As a comparison, yes: the first amount is three-quarters of the second. But 3 : 4 split into a whole gives 42.8571 % and 57.1429 % (three-sevenths and four-sevenths), not 75 % and 25 %. That is why the split mode shows percentages next to the shares.
Does the order of the numbers matter?
Yes. 2 : 3 and 3 : 2 describe opposite mixes. Keep the same item in the same position on both sides of a proportion, for example soy first and honey second.
Can I use it for screen or photo sizes?
You can, but the Aspect Ratio Calculator is built for width and height and suggests the nearest standard format.
Try any of these examples in the Ratio Calculator.
