Ideal Weight Calculator
Find your ideal body weight from your height and sex using four classic formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi — and compare it with the healthy weight range for a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9, in kilograms or pounds.
This tool runs entirely in your browser.
How to use the Ideal Weight Calculator
- 1Choose metric or imperial units and your sex.
- 2Enter your height (in inches for imperial — 5 ft 10 in is 70).
- 3Compare the four formula results with the healthy BMI weight range.
What is the Ideal Weight Calculator?
Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet and adds a fixed amount per extra inch. Devine (1974), still used in medicine to dose drugs, gives men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft and women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg; Robinson, Miller and Hamwi use slightly different constants, which is why the results form a range.
The healthy BMI range shows the weights at which BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height — usually a wider, more forgiving band. None of these formulas account for muscle mass or frame size; they are estimates, not medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the formulas give different answers?
They were fitted to different populations and purposes (drug dosing, insurance tables). Treat the spread as a rough target range rather than one exact number.
Do they work for children?
No. They are meant for adults; children’s healthy weight is judged with age-specific growth charts.
Is the Ideal Weight Calculator free and private?
Yes. The Ideal Weight Calculator is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser. What you type is never sent to a server or stored.
