Square Feet to Square Meters Without the Common Mistakes
· 3 min read
To convert square feet to square meters, multiply by 0.09290304 (or divide by about 10.764). A 12 × 15 ft room is 180 ft², which is 16.72 m². The most common mistake is using the length factor (0.3048 or 3.281) on an area. Because area is length times length, the conversion factor has to be squared too.
This guide works through that mistake and the other ways area conversions go wrong, with examples for rooms, apartments and land.
Why can't I use the length factor for area?
One foot is 0.3048 m. A square foot is a square 1 ft on each side, so its area is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m². Every area factor is the square of its length factor:
| Length | Area |
|---|---|
| 1 ft = 0.3048 m | 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² |
| 1 m = 3.2808 ft | 1 m² = 10.7639 ft² |
| 1 yd = 3 ft | 1 yd² = 9 ft² |
| 1 m = 100 cm | 1 m² = 10,000 cm² |
What the mistake looks like: someone divides 180 ft² by 3.2808 and gets 54.86 "m²", more than three times the real figure of 16.72 m². If your area answer seems wildly off, check whether you used a length factor.
Problem: Converting room dimensions
You have a room measured as 12 ft × 15 ft and need square meters for a flooring order. There are two correct routes:
- Area first: 12 × 15 = 180 ft², then 180 × 0.09290304 = 16.72 m².
- Lengths first: 12 ft = 3.6576 m and 15 ft = 4.572 m, then 3.6576 × 4.572 = 16.72 m².
Both give 16.7225472 m². Convert the lengths first if you also need metric dimensions for cutting; otherwise convert the area. Either way, add whatever allowance your flooring supplier recommends for cuts and waste.
Problem: Comparing apartment listings
Listings in metric countries give floor area in m², and in the US in ft². A 50 m² apartment is 538.2 ft², and a 1,000 ft² apartment is 92.9 m². A quick mental check: multiply square meters by about 10.8 to get square feet.
Keep in mind that the measurement rules differ between markets, for example whether wall thickness, balconies or basements are counted. The conversion is exact; the definition of "floor area" may not be.
Problem: Mixing up acres and hectares
Land is measured in acres in the US and UK and in hectares in most other countries.
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m² (a 100 m × 100 m square) = 2.471 acres
- 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.86 m² = 0.4047 hectares
- 1 square kilometer = 100 hectares
- 1 square mile = 640 acres = 2.59 km²
A plot of 2.5 acres is 10,117 m², just over one hectare. A frequent mistake is assuming an acre and a hectare are roughly the same size; a hectare is almost two and a half times bigger.
Problem: Very small or very large numbers
Converting a postage-stamp area to square miles, or a country to square millimeters, produces numbers with many zeros. The converter switches to scientific notation for values at or above 10¹⁵ or below 10⁻⁶. For instance, 1e-7 means 0.0000001. Pick units closer to the size you are measuring to keep the result readable.
How to use the Area Converter
The Area Converter covers square millimeters through square miles:
- Enter the area in Value.
- Choose From and To units: mm², cm², m², hectares, km², in², ft², yd², acres or mi². Tap ⇄ to reverse them.
- Read the result, or look at the table that lists the same area in every unit.
The converter takes areas, not dimensions. If you have a length and width, multiply them first (in the same unit), then convert. If you only need to convert the side lengths, the Length Converter does that, and for anything three-dimensional, such as concrete or soil, use the Volume Converter.
FAQ
How many square feet is a 3 m × 4 m room?
3 × 4 = 12 m², and 12 × 10.7639 ≈ 129.2 ft².
Is a square yard the same as 3 square feet?
No. A square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 ft². That's the squaring rule again.
Why are acres such an odd number of square feet?
An acre was historically the area one ox team could plow in a day, standardized as 1 furlong × 1 chain (660 ft × 66 ft), which is 43,560 ft².
