Price, Label and Photograph Handmade Goods for a Craft Fair
ยท 6 min read
To get handmade goods ready for a craft fair, start with the price: add up what one item costs you, pick the profit margin you want, and let the Profit Margin Calculator work out the selling price. After that, make barcode labels so you can count stock, watermark your product photos before posting them, and build one collage that tells people where to find your stall. Once the fair is over, the ROI Calculator shows whether the day earned back what you spent on it. Each of these is a free tool on Emojar and none of them needs an account.
The example here is a small candle business. One 200 ml jar candle costs 7.20 to make once you count the wax, wick, fragrance oil, the jar and its label. The fair is in three weeks, the stall is booked, and nothing has a price yet. The calculators have no currency setting, so the numbers work in whatever money you use.
How do you price a product from its cost?
Open the Profit Margin Calculator and set I know to Cost and desired margin. Enter 7.20 as the Cost and 55 as the Margin. The Selling price comes out at 16.00. Under it you get a profit of 8.80 per candle and a markup of 122.222%.
The tool uses price = cost รท (1 โ margin), which here is 7.20 รท 0.45. If you enter a margin of 100 or more it stops with "A margin must be below 100 %", because margin is a share of the price and profit can never be the whole price.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost. Mixing them up is one of the most common pricing mistakes. To see why, switch I know to Cost and markup, keep the cost at 7.20 and type 50. A 50% markup gives a price of 10.80, a profit of 3.60 and a profit margin of only 33.3333%. Someone who meant "50% margin" and added 50% to the cost has priced every candle well below what they intended.
There's also Cost and selling price for checking a price you already have. Put in 7.20 and 16 and the tool reads it back as a 55% margin.
How much can a bigger item cost you to make?
For a new product you can work backwards. Say similar large candles at other stalls sell for about 18 and you want to keep your 55% margin. Choose Selling price and margin, enter 18 and 55, and the calculator solves for the Cost: 8.10. If materials for the large candle come to more than 8.10, you need a higher price, a cheaper jar or a smaller margin on that one.
Work out margins before tax. The calculator's FAQ says to use net prices and add VAT or sales tax afterwards with the VAT calculator.
How do you make barcode labels for your stock?
The Barcode Generator makes a label for each product line. Set Format to Code 128 (any text), since it takes letters, numbers and dashes, and type a stock code such as CND-LAV-200 into Value. Use the Height slider (30 to 200 px) and the Bar width slider (1 to 4 px) to fit your label stickers. Keep Show text below the barcode ticked so the code is still readable when a scanner isn't to hand. Then click โฌ SVG for print software that scales vector files, or โฌ PNG, which saves at three times the on-screen size.
These labels are for your own stock counts and for keeping track of what sold. The EAN-13 and UPC-A formats you see on supermarket shelves are also in the list, but the tool's own FAQ points out that real retail numbers have to be licensed from GS1 so they're unique. If a shop asks you for barcodes on stock they'll sell, that's what you'll need.
How do you watermark product photos before you post them?
Before the fair you'll probably post the candles online, and maybe sell them online as well. Watermark Image takes up to 50 photos at once and applies the same settings to every one. The text starts out as "ยฉ 2026 Your Name" in the bottom-right corner at 45% opacity, so replace it with your shop name. You can pick a Font and Colour, or switch to Logo image and upload your logo (a PNG with a transparent background works best).
For photos you only want people to look at, such as a preview sent to a shop that might stock you, tick Repeat across the whole image (tiled) and set a Rotation. A tiled mark is much harder to crop out than one in a corner. With more than one photo loaded, the button reads โฌ Download 12 images (ZIP) or however many you added. PNG and WebP files stay in their format and everything else is saved as JPG.
How do you make a "find us at the fair" post?
Use the Photo Collage Maker to put the range into a single image. Choose 2 to 9 photos and pick the layout 1 large + 3 so your best seller is the big one. Set Shape to Portrait 4:5 (Instagram). Click a cell to choose which photo goes in it, drag inside the cell to move the photo around, and use the zoom to crop in closer. Spacing and rounded corners have their own sliders, and you can change the background colour.
For social media, set Export width to 1080 px (social media). In 4:5 that gives a 1080 ร 1350 JPG. To print a sign for the front of the stall, export the same collage at 4096 px (print). There's no watermark on the collage, so if you want your name on it, run it through Watermark Image afterwards.
The barcode, watermark and collage tools all run in your browser. Your photos are processed on your own device and never uploaded.
Did the stall pay for itself?
After the fair, add up everything the day cost: the stall fee, a table cover and display stands, and the materials for the stock you brought. In this example that's 480. The takings were 696, from 30 small candles at 16 and 12 large ones at 18.
Enter 480 as Amount invested and 696 as Amount returned (final value) in the ROI Calculator, and set Investment period to Donโt annualize, because a single weekend isn't worth turning into a yearly rate. You'll see an ROI of 45%, a gain of 216.00 and a multiple of 1.45ร. Leftover stock isn't in the returned figure, so count it separately or add what it cost to the final value. To compare several fairs over a season, pick Start and end date and the tool adds an annualized return (CAGR).
FAQ
Should I use margin or markup to set my prices?
Use whichever one you think in, as long as you know which it is. The Profit Margin Calculator shows both side by side. At a 50% markup your margin is only 33.3%.
Can I put an EAN-13 barcode on products I sell to shops?
The Barcode Generator draws EAN-13 and adds the check digit for you. A retail EAN or UPC number still has to be licensed from GS1 so it's unique, and Code 128 is enough for your own stock labels.
How many photos can I watermark at once?
Up to 50. The same text or logo settings go on every photo, and you download them together as a ZIP file.
Does the photo collage have an Emojar watermark?
No. The downloaded JPG has only your photos and the background colour you picked.
More pricing and money calculators are in Calculators, and the photo tools are in Image Tools.
