6 Everyday Reasons to Turn PDF Pages Into JPG Images

Converting PDF pages to JPG makes them usable anywhere a photo works: social media posts, image-only upload forms, slides, chat apps and website previews. Choose the resolution based on where the image is going, with 96โ€“150 DPI for screens and 300 DPI for printing or text recognition, and convert only the pages you need. JPG gives compact files, which makes it the right pick for pages with photos and for sharing.

Here are six everyday situations where it helps, with the settings that suit each.

First, what does DPI mean for a PDF page?

PDF pages are measured in inches (or points), not pixels. DPI decides how many pixels each inch becomes. A US Letter page is 8.5 ร— 11 inches, so:

Resolution US Letter page A4 page
72 DPI 612 ร— 792 px 595 ร— 841 px
96 DPI 816 ร— 1056 px 793 ร— 1122 px
150 DPI 1275 ร— 1650 px 1240 ร— 1753 px
300 DPI 2550 ร— 3300 px 2480 ร— 3507 px

Doubling the DPI quadruples the pixel count, and the file size grows substantially with it, so pick the lowest setting that looks good where the image will be seen.

1. Posting a flyer or event poster on social media

Social apps don't accept PDFs in posts, but your flyer was designed as one.

  • Pages: the flyer's page, e.g. 1
  • Resolution: 150 DPI
  • Quality: 85โ€“90%

At 150 DPI a letter-size flyer is 1275 pixels wide, plenty for a feed post. If the platform wants a particular shape, crop it afterwards with the Image Cropper.

2. Upload forms that only accept images

Some portals accept "JPG or PNG only" for a certificate, a utility bill or a signed form you have as a PDF.

  • Pages: just the page they asked for
  • Resolution: 150 DPI (300 DPI if fine print must stay readable)
  • Quality: 85%

If the portal has a size cap, lower the quality a little before lowering the DPI. Text stays legible longer that way.

3. Adding a page to a presentation

You want to show page 4 of a report on a slide. Inserting an image is simpler and more reliable than embedding a PDF.

  • Pages: 4
  • Resolution: 150 DPI
  • Quality: 90%

For text-heavy pages or charts on a big projector screen, consider the PNG version below for sharper edges.

4. Thumbnails and previews

Showing a preview of a menu, brochure or report on a website, or in a listing? Small images load fast.

  • Pages: 1 (the cover) or 1-3
  • Resolution: 72 or 96 DPI
  • Quality: 75โ€“80%

5. Sharing in chat apps

A JPG opens inline in any messaging app, while a PDF often has to be downloaded and opened separately. For a page or two you want someone to glance at on their phone:

  • Pages: the relevant pages, e.g. 2, 5
  • Resolution: 96โ€“150 DPI
  • Quality: 80โ€“85%

6. Feeding pages into text recognition (OCR)

OCR software reads text from images and generally works better with more pixels per letter.

  • Pages: all, or the ones you need
  • Resolution: 300 DPI
  • Quality: 90โ€“100%

If your PDF already has selectable text, skip this. PDF to Text extracts it directly and more accurately than OCR.

How to convert PDF to JPG step by step

  1. Open PDF to JPG and choose your PDF. The page count appears next to the file name.
  2. In Pages, keep all or type pages and ranges such as 1-3, 5.
  3. Choose a Resolution: 72, 96, 150 (recommended) or 300 (print).
  4. Set JPG quality (30โ€“100%, default 90%).
  5. Click Convert to JPG. Each page becomes its own file, named like report-page-4.jpg. Download them individually or with "Download all".

Pages are drawn with pdf.js, the same rendering engine Firefox uses for PDFs, right in your browser, so the document isn't uploaded. Transparent areas become white, since JPG can't store transparency.

When should you use PNG instead?

JPG's compression is designed for photos. On pages that are mostly text, thin lines or flat-color charts, it can leave faint smudges around sharp edges. For those, PDF to PNG produces lossless, crisp output, at the cost of larger files for photo-heavy pages.

FAQ

Why does my converted page look blurry when I zoom in?

The resolution was too low for how it's being viewed. Re-convert at 150 or 300 DPI.

Can I get all the pages as one long image?

No. Each page is saved as a separate JPG, which is what most upload forms and social apps expect anyway.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

No. Open the PDF with its password, save an unprotected copy, and convert that.
