How to Play Emoji XO — Tic-Tac-Toe with a Twist ❌⭕
Tic-Tac-Toe is one of the oldest strategy games in the world, and the Emojar version gives it a fresh coat of emoji paint. Instead of plain Xs and Os you play with any emoji you like — and the board can grow up to 5×5 for a real challenge.
How to Play
The rules are the classic ones:
- Two players take turns placing their piece on an empty cell.
- The first player to align a full row, column, or diagonal wins.
- If all cells are filled with no winner, the game is a draw.
On Emojar you can play against a friend in the same browser, or challenge the computer opponent and try to beat its AI.
Choosing Your Emoji Pieces
Before the game starts, each player can pick any emoji from the full Emojar library to use as their piece. Want to battle 🦊 vs 🐼? Go for it. The emoji picker includes a search bar, so finding your favourite takes only a second.
Board Sizes
The XO game supports three board sizes:
| Size | Win condition | | ---- | ------------- | | 3×3 | 3 in a row | | 4×4 | 4 in a row | | 5×5 | 5 in a row |
Larger boards mean more room to manoeuvre — and more ways for the game to end in a draw if both players play defensively.
The Computer Opponent
The AI follows a priority strategy:
- Win — if there is a winning move available, take it.
- Block — if the opponent is about to win, block them.
- Centre — claim the centre cell when it is free.
- Corner — occupy a corner to maximise winning lines.
- Random — fill any remaining open cell.
On a 3×3 board a perfect human player can always force a draw. The challenge is to see how quickly you can do it.
Tips for Winning
- Take the centre first on a 3×3 board — it gives you the most winning lines.
- Force a fork — create two simultaneous threats so your opponent can only block one.
- On larger boards, focus on building consecutive runs rather than isolated placements.
- Pay close attention to diagonals; they are easy to overlook until it is too late.
Scoreboard
Emojar tracks your fastest wins per board size and per mode (vs computer / vs friend). Your scores are saved locally in the browser, so you can race to beat your own record.
